A tragedy has struck the remote Aboriginal community of Doomadgee, leaving a community in mourning. A devastating car crash has claimed the lives of a 30-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl, with another passenger fighting for their life in intensive care. This heartbreaking event occurred in the early hours of the morning, around 6:30 am, on Doomadgee Road, a location 400 kilometers north of Mount Isa.
Emergency services responded to the scene after reports of a vehicle rollover. Upon arrival, they found the driver and four passengers, all suffering from serious injuries. Sadly, the 30-year-old driver from Cloncurry was pronounced dead at the scene despite immediate first aid. A 10-year-old girl was rushed to Doomadgee Hospital but was also declared deceased.
Two other passengers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and received treatment at Doomadgee Hospital. However, a third passenger remains in critical condition, highlighting the severity of the crash.
A crime scene has been established, and investigations are currently underway. Authorities have taken a 28-year-old man into custody, who is known to the deceased.
The Queensland Police Service is providing support to the Doomadgee community and local officers during this difficult time. The community is urged to remain respectful as the investigation progresses.
In response to the tragedy, local shops have closed for Sorry Business, a period of mourning in Aboriginal culture. The Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council has expressed its condolences to the grieving families via social media and has requested that residents avoid the Doomadgee Road highway until further notice.
