INCLUDING TWO CHILDREN. TRAFFIC AT A CRAWL FOR HOURS. THIS WAS THE MASS PIKE. AFTER TWO CHAIN REACTION CRASHES LESS THAN A MILE APART. SHUT DOWN THE INTERSTATE IN BOTH DIRECTIONS, DELAYING LOCALS AND OUT OF STATERS. I WAS COMING FROM HOME. I HAD TO GET MY DAUGHTER AT DAYCARE, WHICH COMPLETELY LATE FOR JUST A TON OF TRAFFIC. WE ENDED UP TAKING A DETOUR BUT ENDED UP GETTING LOST. STATE POLICE SAY IT STARTED AROUND 245. THE FIRST CRASH, INVOLVING FOUR VEHICLES, A TRUCK HIT A GUARDRAIL, THEN A FLATBED TRUCK CARRYING A JEEP SWERVED, TOSSED ITS JEEP AND CAUSED MORE CHAIN REACTION CRASHES. NO INJURIES FROM ALL OF THAT, BUT THE SECOND CRASH WAS SERIOUS. A PASSENGER CAR CRUSHED BETWEEN TWO TRUCKS, A MEDFLIGHT HELICOPTER LANDING ON THE PIKE TO TAKE THE SERIOUSLY INJURED DRIVER TO THE HOSPITAL. TWO JUVENILES IN THAT CAR ALSO SERIOUSLY HURT AND TAKEN BY AMBULANCES. THIS RETIRED FIREFIGHTER HEARD IT ALL FROM HIS HOUSE. WE HEARD A LOUD SCREECHING SKIDDING AND THEN WE HEARD A LOUD EXPLOSION. I KNEW EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS. A TRACTOR TRAILER ACCIDENT. MY WIFE AND I TURNED AROUND AND WE REALIZED THAT UP THE ROAD A HALF A MILE. THEY’RE WORKING ON EVEN MORE SERIOUS CRASH WITH ENTRAPMENT. Multiple crashes close Massachusetts Turnpike in both directions near I-84 in Charlton
The Massachusetts Turnpike in the central part of the state was shut down in both directions for a time Monday afternoon after multiple crashes in the eastbound lanes of the highway, according to MassDOT. Just after 3 p.m., both sides of the highway were closed for about 30 minutes at mile marker 85, which is about 7 miles east of the Interstate 84 interchange in Charlton. Westbound lanes reopened at about 3:40 p.m., and eastbound lanes reopened just before 6 p.m. From Sky5, multiple damaged vehicles were at the scenes including tractor trailers, a Jeep Wrangler and a small, maroon SUV.Check your driveState police said in the first incident, a truck carrying a forklift crashed into the guard rail. A flatbed truck carrying a Jeep swerved to avoid the crash, and the Jeep landed on the roadway. A tractor-trailer swerved to avoid the Jeep in the road and hit a box truck.The second crash happened less than a mile away as drivers began breaking in reaction to the first crash, state police said. A bobtail tractor crashed into the back of a passenger car, pushing it into the rear of a full tractor-trailer.State police said there were no injuries from the first crash, but the driver of the passenger vehicle involved in the second crash was seriously injured and flown to a local hospital. Two juveniles who were passengers in that car also sustained serious injuries and were taken by ambulance to the same hospital.
