Edit or delete contacts - Android (2025)

After you add contacts to your Android device, you can make changes or delete them.

Contacts saved to your Google Account will sync with Google Contacts and all your Android devices.

Important:Some of these steps only work onAndroid 6.0 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

Change contact details

  1. On your Android device, open the Contacts app Edit or delete contacts - Android (1).
  2. Tap the contact you want to edit.
  3. At the top right, tap Edit Edit or delete contacts - Android (2).
  4. If asked, choose the account.
  5. Enter the contact’s name, email, and phone number.
    • To enter more information, tap Addfields.
  6. To change the photo for a contact, tap the photo, then choose an option.
  7. Tap Save.

Add a contact to your favorites

You can put people you contact often at the top of your list.

  1. On your Android device, open the Contacts app Edit or delete contacts - Android (3).
  2. Tap the contact you want to add to your favorites.
  3. At the top, tap Add to FavoritesEdit or delete contacts - Android (4).

Deletecontacts

  1. On your Android device, open the Contacts app Edit or delete contacts - Android (5).
  2. Select an option.
    • Single contact:
      1. Tap the contact.
      2. At the top right, tap Contact settingsEdit or delete contacts - Android (6)Edit or delete contacts - Android (7) Delete Edit or delete contacts - Android (8) Delete.
    • Multiple contacts:
      1. Touch and hold a contact.
      2. Tap the other contacts.
      3. Tap Delete Edit or delete contacts - Android (9) Edit or delete contacts - Android (10) Delete.
    • All contacts:
      1. Touch and hold a contact.
      2. At the top right, tap More Edit or delete contacts - Android (11) Edit or delete contacts - Android (12) Select all Edit or delete contacts - Android (13) Delete Edit or delete contacts - Android (14) Edit or delete contacts - Android (15) Delete.
  3. Your deleted contacts are moved to your Trash.
    • After 30 days in your Trash, contacts are deleted permanently.
  4. To delete contacts permanently, in your Trash:
    • Single contact: Tap the contact Edit or delete contacts - Android (16) Delete forever Edit or delete contacts - Android (17) Delete forever.
    • Multiple contacts:
      1. Touch and hold a contact and then tap the other contacts.
      2. Tap More Edit or delete contacts - Android (18) Edit or delete contacts - Android (19) Delete forever Edit or delete contacts - Android (20) Delete forever.
    • All contacts: Tap Empty Trash now Edit or delete contacts - Android (21) Delete forever.

Recover deleted contacts

If you deleted a contact in the last 30 days, you can move it out of your Trash.

  • To open Trash, you need to have automatic sync turned on. Learn how to turn on automatic sync for Google Contacts.
  • Trash is only available when your device is online. If yourdevice is offline or doesn’t have a network connection, it won't load until you goonline.

Important: If the deleted contact wasn’t stored in your Google Account, you can’t recover it. Learn how to back up your contacts to your Google Account.

  1. On your Android device, open theContacts app Edit or delete contacts - Android (22).
  2. At the top right, select the Google Account that has the contact you moved to the Trash.
  3. At the bottom, tap Organize Edit or delete contacts - Android (23)Trash.
  4. Select an option.
    • A single contact: Tap the contact Edit or delete contacts - Android (24) Recover.
    • Multiple contacts:
      1. Touch and hold a contact and then tap the other contacts.
      2. Tap More Edit or delete contacts - Android (25) Edit or delete contacts - Android (26) Recover.
    • All contacts: Tap More Edit or delete contacts - Android (27) Edit or delete contacts - Android (28) Select all Edit or delete contacts - Android (29) More Edit or delete contacts - Android (30) Edit or delete contacts - Android (31) Recover.

Undo changes to contacts

You can undo any changes you made to your contacts during the past 30 days, all at once.

Important: Contacts deleted permanently from your Trash can't be recovered.

  1. On your Android device, open the Contacts app Edit or delete contacts - Android (32).
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture Edit or delete contacts - Android (33) Contacts settings.
  3. Under "Edit contacts," tap Undo changes. If asked, choose which Google Account you want to change.
  4. Choose a time to go back to.
  5. Tap Confirm.

Tip: When you restore contacts to a certain time, such as one week ago, any contacts added after that time won't show up. Learn how to export your current contacts and add them back later.

Block contacts

When you block a number, you won't receive calls or text from that number anymore. If a contact has more than one number, all phone numbers that the person has will be blocked.

You also can report them as a spammer.

  1. On your Android device, open the Contacts app Edit or delete contacts - Android (34).
  2. Tap the contact you want to block.
  3. At the top right, tap Contact settingsEdit or delete contacts - Android (35)Edit or delete contacts - Android (36) Block numbers Edit or delete contacts - Android (37) Block.
    • Block only one number: Press only on the number.
    • Spam caller: Check the box for "Report as spam."

To unblock a contact, tap Contact settingsEdit or delete contacts - Android (38)Edit or delete contacts - Android (39) Unblock numbers Edit or delete contacts - Android (40) Unblock.

  • Unblock a single number:
    1. Touch and hold a phone number.
    2. Tap Unblock number Edit or delete contacts - Android (41) Unblock.

View blocked numbers

  1. On your Android device, open the Contacts app Edit or delete contacts - Android (42).
  2. At the bottom, tap Organize Edit or delete contacts - Android (43) Blocked numbers.
