Not sure which theme to go with? All of the ideas below are tried and tested crowd-pleasers that kids are sure to love. We’ve rated all the party types as Easy, Average, or Challenging to set up, and have also provided a list of the supplies you’ll need for each, to help you identify the best choice for you and your child.

Great Party Ideas That All Kids Will Love

Scavenger Hunt Party

Complexity: Challenging

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Items for the kids to find (more on this below)
  • Sheets of card with these items listed (one for each child)
  • A basket or bag for each child to gather things in
  • Range of prizes

A scavenger hunt is one of the best parties for a child’s seventh birthday celebration: both boys and girls will love this fun, active game. You can choose to hold the game either indoors or outdoors. A park or large garden is perfect for the latter. Have the kids find leaves, pebbles, feathers, pinecones, and the like. For an indoor scavenger hunt, item ideas could include hair clips, pencil sharpeners, teaspoons, and bookmarks. Alternatively, you could hide very specific items in the room or home, such as a blue toy rabbit, a pink hairband, or a striped sock.

For a slightly different take on the game, organize scavenger hunt bingo. The idea is the same, but give each kid a card detailing each of the items to find—they need to cross each thing off the card as they discover them. Alternatively, divide children into two teams for the scavenger hunt, with each member of the winning team receiving a prize.

Painting Party

Complexity: Average

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Range of paints and paintbrushes
  • Containers for the paint and water
  • Plenty of paper towels or rags
  • Craft paper or item to paint
  • Apron for each child
  • Sheets to protect table/carpet etc

Another sure-fire winner for a 7-year-old birthday party is a classic painting party! This may sound a little daunting (a bunch of 7-year-olds let loose with paints in your home is somewhat anxiety-inducing), but with a bit of prior planning and plenty of supervision, this idea can be a lot of fun—and your carpet and furniture will come away unscathed.

Put down plenty of sheets both on the surface to be used and the surrounding carpets before starting. Choose to either allow kids to freestyle on large sheets of craft paper, or have them paint specific items; you can pick up a range of ceramics specifically designed for kids to paint in most craft stores. Best of all, each invitee will have a beautiful item to take home with them at the end of the party.

Fabulous Disco Party

Complexity: Easy

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Pre-prepared playlist of songs
  • Disco ball
  • Novelty items such as oversized sunglasses, feather boas, inflatable guitars, etc. (optional)
  • Selection of prizes (optional)

If you’re looking for super easy 7-year-old birthday party ideas, a disco celebration could be perfect! As well as being extremely easy to organize, kids are bound to have a blast dancing to all their favorite tunes before settling down to a yummy birthday feast and cake. Take things up a notch by putting out some fun accessories for the children to enjoy, and consider incorporating some party games into the dancing mix to add to the excitement.

For birthday parties on a budget, a disco party is hard to beat. If you’ve got a karaoke machine to hand, why not bring this into play too?

Cinema Party

Complexity: Easy

Supplies You’ll Need: None!

This party is one of the simplest there is to organize—simply find a showing of a film that the kids will love at a local cinema, and invite along a few of your child’s closest friends. If you’d like to push the boat out—and have the budget for it—you may wish to take advantage of a cinema’s party package. Many cinemas now offer these: for your money, each kid will typically get a snack pack, drink, and balloon along with their ticket. And to really go luxe, you could even book out the entire theater for a private screening and extend an invite to the whole class.

Ensure the safety of your young explorer with the Findmykids app—the perfect companion for peace of mind. Complexity: Average

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Range of kid-friendly nail polish
  • Kid-friendly face masks
  • Cucumber slices
  • Pre-prepared playlist of soothing music

Little girls of seven years old are sure to love a fun at-home spa experience party. While this event needs a little bit of prior organization, it’s relatively easy and inexpensive to set up. Before guests arrive, set up a few little stations; perhaps one for manicures, one for pedicures, and one for relaxing facials, complete with soothing face masks and cucumber slices for the eyes. To create the perfect peaceful spa atmosphere, dim the lights in the space you’ll be using, and pop on a playlist of calming music just before invitees arrive. Serve some mocktails and finger foods between ‘treatments’ to uplevel the spa experience further!

Have a Ball with a Baking Party

Complexity: Average

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Cupcake mix (enough for each guest)
  • Pre-prepared frosting
  • Sprinkles, edible balls, and a selection of other toppings
  • Pre-made cookies (two per guest)
  • Apron for each guest

Given the nature of this party, it may be best to limit the number of invitees—and enlist an additional adult helper or two. Ahead of the guests’ arrival, prepare the kitchen by setting up a little station for each child with the ingredients, mixing bowls, spoons, and everything else they’ll need. Start by having the guests make their cupcakes. Once these have been baked and are cooling, keep the kids occupied with decorating a couple of pre-made cookies each with sprinkles and other fun toppings, before moving on to decorating their cupcakes. The finished treats, as well as the aprons you’ve supplied, make for perfect party favors.

Complexity: Easy

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • A kid-friendly movie queued up
  • Plenty of popcorn and ice cream
  • Kid-friendly face masks (optional)
  • Craft kits (optional)

One of the most popular ideas for a 7-year-old girl’s birthday celebration, a slumber party is not only easy to organize and budget-friendly, but promises to be lots of fun for the birthday girl and her guests. Ask invitees to bring their sleeping bags and pillows, have a kid-friendly movie ready to go, and bowls of popcorn and plenty of ice cream to hand.

Depending on the preferences of your child, she may prefer to be left to ‘do her own thing’ with her friends, or have a party with a little more structure. If it’s the latter, you could provide some kid-friendly face masks for everyone to enjoy a little post-movie pampering, or some mess-free craft kits (such as sewing or bead bracelet making), depending on her interests.

Stay-Over Garden Camping Party

Complexity: Average

Supplies:

  • Enough tents for guests to sleep in
  • Snacks such as hotdogs and s’mores
  • Cushions and blankets
  • Strings of outdoor fairy lights and balloons to decorate the garden

Give your soon-to-be seven-year-old a birthday celebration to remember forever with a garden stay-over camping party! Needless to say, this is one of those party ideas that are best for the warmer months—and even then, be prepared to move the fun indoors if the weather turns inclement.

Ask attendees to bring their own sleeping bags, so all you need to do is create a magical backyard camping space with a few tents and strings of camping lights and balloons. Put out plenty of snuggly cushions and blankets and serve up some crowd-pleasing camping treats for a truly magical under-the-stars party.

Spectacular Science Party

Awesome 7-Year-Old Birthday Ideas to Inspire You (22)

Gerain0812/Shutterstock.com

Complexity: Challenging (unless you get a professional in, in which case it’s Easy!)

Supplies:

  • For the lava lamp
    • A clear plastic bottle
    • A bottle of vegetable oil
    • Water
    • An Alka Seltzer
    • Food coloring
  • For the Absorbing Sugar Cubes experiment
    • Sugar cubes
    • Water
    • Food coloring
    • Aluminium foil
    • Cling film
    • Paper towels
    • Kitchen roll

If you’re seeking ideas for a little boy who loves science then this party theme is sure to be a winner! While you can book a professional to run a science-themed party for you, organizing one yourself is totally doable by gathering the supplies above. Before the guests arrive, set out stations for each child with what they’ll need for each activity. Then simply follow the step-by-step instructions below.

Lava Lamp Experiment
  1. Fill the plastic bottle about a quarter full with water.
  2. Top up to around ¾ full with vegetable oil.
  3. Once the oil and water have separated, add food coloring until the mixture is the desired color.
  4. Add half an Alka Seltzer tablet and watch the bubbles form.
  5. Keep adding more of the Alka Seltzer tablet to keep the bubbles forming.
Absorbing Sugaer Cubes Experiment
  1. Add a few drops of food coloring to a small amount of water and pour this mixture onto a plate.
  2. Add a stack of sugar cubes and ask the kids to observe what happens. The colored water should slowly make its way up the cubes and eventually cause the stack to collapse. Ask the kids how many cubes the water passes through before it stops.
  3. Now ask each child to put a single sugar cube on their plate and put a small sheet of aluminum foil on top of the cube. Ask the kids to stack some more cubes on top of the foil—does this stop the water from permeating through to the upper cubes?
  4. Try the same experiment, substituting the tin foil for cling foil, and then for a piece of paper towel—can the kids predict what will be most effective at stopping the upper cubes from absorbing the colored water?

In another part of the yard, where there’s a slight raise, put out a tarpaulin, add a liberal amount of baby shampoo, and set up a hose for a DIY waterslide! Decorate the garden with banners and balloons to create a festive atmosphere, and serve up hot dogs and ice creams in between the fun!

Fun Activities for a 7-Year-Old’s Birthday Party

Awesome 7-Year-Old Birthday Ideas to Inspire You (24)

Want to have some fun activities up your sleeve for your seven-year-old’s birthday party? We’ve got the ideas you need! Below you’ll find classic party games and activities that’ll delight both the special birthday boy or girl and all their guests.

Duck, Duck Goose

This game is a perennial crowd pleaser and, with no equipment required, is super easy to set up if you have ten minutes to fill or need to keep kids occupied between activities. Simply ask all the kids to sit in a circle and ask for a volunteer to start the game. This child walks around the outside of the circle, tapping kids randomly on the head as they pass saying ‘duck.’ When they choose, they tap a child on the head and shout ‘goose!’

At this point, this child has to run back and sit in their original spot while the ‘goose’ chases them. If the child gets back to their spot without being caught, they can sit down, and it’s now the turn of the ‘goose’ to go around the circle saying ‘duck, duck, goose.’ If they are caught, this child takes another turn.

Tug of War

Having a game of tug of war to hand during an outdoor party is always a great idea. Line two equal teams of kids up on either side, holding onto a rope, and mark a line on the floor. The team that pulls the other team over to their side of this mark is the winner. Wherever you choose to play, be sure that there’s a soft landing for any kids that take a tumble. Don’t have a rope to hand? Knotted sheets or even dressing gown cords can serve the same purpose.

Capture the Flag

Always a popular party game, Capture the Flag is the perfect activity to suggest when energy levels are running high! Divide the children into two teams, each of which has a flag or totem. The aim of this game is for each team to try to capture the flag or totem of the other, without being tagged.

Divide an outdoor space into two territories, and let the kids know that although they’re safe in their territory, if they enter that of the opposition they can be tagged. If they’re tagged this team member may be frozen, have to return to the far side of the space, or even have to join the enemy team—decide on this rule before starting the game.

Whichever team can capture the flag of the opposition and bring it back to their territory is the winner.

Why is a 7th birthday party a big deal?

By the age of seven, major events have been happening in kids’ brains—there has been a huge development in both the frontal and temporal lobes, meaning children are making great leaps ahead in both their cognitive capacity and social skills. These new skills mean that children are much more aware of the world around them, and are fascinated to engage with it, as well as with others around them—meaning that they’re likely to get more out of a birthday party (and other social event) than ever before.

Are there any traditions related to a 7th birthday party?

While there are no specific traditions connected with seventh birthdays in the West, this specific birthday does have its own traditions in other parts of the world. For example, in Korea, a child’s seventh birthday is marked with a traditional celebration called the Doljanchi, believed to bring good luck and prosperity to the birthday child. Meanwhile, in Japan, a child’s seventh birthday is celebrated with the traditional ceremony called Shichi-Go-San, during which the birthday child visits a shrine with his or her parents

How do you plan a 7th birthday party?

Whatever type of seventh birthday party you’ve decided to opt for, proper prior planning and organization are key. Work out your budget, and then make a list of the supplies you’ll need and anything you need to book, figure out an invite list, and draft in a couple of friends to help on the day of the party itself. Don’t forget to check whether any of the invitees have any specific dietary requirements, and purchase, if relevant, decorations, party favors, and party supplies in good time.
